Third-Ranked Falcons Women Still Perfect in GNAC With 49th Straight Win
January 20, 2005

ELLENSBURG, Wa. (Jan. 20) Mandy Wood scored a team-high 14 and Quinn Brewe matched a career-high with 12 as nationally ranked Seattle Pacific defeated Central Washington 79-60 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game on Thursday evening in Ellensburg.

The Falcons, who are ranked No. 3 nationally and No. 1 in the west region, improved to 7-0 in the GNAC and 15-1 overall with their 49th straight league victory. Seattle Pacific, which has also won 75 of its last 76 regular season games, has not lost a league contest in the past three seasons. Central Washington dropped to 4-3 in league play and 10-5 overall.

Wood (Jr., Port Angeles, Wa.) was a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range and 5-for-10 overall. She also had four assists. Brewe (Fr., Edmonds, Wa./Meadowdale) sparked the Falcons with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench. SPU’s bench outscored Central’s 25-12.

In what has become a trademark for this year’s SPU women’s basketball team, the Falcons put together a pair of first half runs to capture a commanding lead at the half.

Wood capped off an early 10-2 run with her first triple of the night that broke a 6-6 tie and gave the Falcons an eight-point cushion. Amy Taylor (Sr., Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood), who scored all eight of her points in the first half scored on a lay-up and then drained a three of her own for the first five points of the run that gave SPU the lead for good.

Minutes later, Brewe hit all four free-throw attempts during a 13-2 run that gave the Falcons a 17-point lead, 31-14, midway through the half. SPU held a double-digit lead throughout the rest of the game.

Brittney Kroon (Jr., Wasilla, Ak.) added 13 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots in the win. Michelle Beaumont chipped in with nine points and six rebounds.

Jamie Corwin led the Cats with a game-high 16 points to go along with four assists in the loss. Laura Wright scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Moriah Hover had seven points and nine rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.

Led by Wood, the Falcons shot 50 percent (6-12) from three-point range. SPU also shot 46 percent (29-53) overall. Central shot 40 percent from the field, but just 14 percent (1-7) from behind the arc and 50 percent (5-10) from the foul line.

The Falcons have a week off, but go for their 50th straight GNAC win next Thursday against 24th-ranked Western Washington, the region’s No. 3 team. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. between the GNAC’s only undefeated teams.
