Seattle Pacific Women Make It Ten in Row, Beat Wolves 70-49

MONMOUTH, Or. (Jan. 8) ­ Carli Smith had 13 points, including five during a 16-4 run that enabled Seattle Pacific University to break out of a tie late in the first half as the No. 4-ranked Falcons defeated Western Oregon 70-49 Saturday afternoon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game.

Trisha Hermanson (Sr., 5-6, Buckley, Wa./White River) added 11 points and five assists as SPU (4-0, 12-1) won its 10th straight and 46 in conference play without a loss over four seasons.

The game was tied 17-17 with 6:45 left in the opening half before took command. Smith (Jr., 5-11, Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) had a basket and three free throws and five other players scored baskets, including Hermanson, who had one of her three three-pointers to help the Falcons open a 33-21 lead just before the end of the half.

Seattle Pacific then used 8-0 and 11-0 runs in the second period to pull away. Smith also had a game-high nine rebounds, in double figures with 11 points. She also had five rebounds. Brittney Kroon (Jr., 6-4, Wasilla, Ak.), meanwhile, chipped in with nine points, three blocks and four steals.

The Falcons were playing their second straight game without regular starting guard Mandy Wood, who has a leg injury. Coincidentally it was SPU's second consecutive win by the exact same score. They beat Humboldt State 70-49 on Thursday in Arcata. Eleven of the 12 victories have been by 20 points or more.

Kagney Kohne and Shannon Talbott led Western Oregon (1-3, 4-7)with 14 points each. Kohne also had seven rebounds. The Wolves have lost five in a row.

After shooting just 37 percent in the first half, the Falcons hit 54 percent in the final period. They finished with a 35-29 edge in rebounds and eight fewer turnovers.

Seattle Pacific's reserves outscored their WOU counterparts 31-13. Jenny Poe (Jr., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa.), Autumn Fielding (So., 5-9, Kennewick, Wa.) and quinn Brewe (Fr., 6-1, Lynnwood, Wa./Meadowdale) each contributed seven points.

SPU hosts Northwest Nazarene Thursday night at 7.
