SEATTLE (Dec. 30) – Carli Smith scored a career-high 19 points and hauled in 18 rebounds to help lead Seattle Pacific to a 90-65 victory over Cal Poly Pomona in a national showdown in the final day of the GNAC/CCAA Challenge on Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (10-1), ranked No. 4 in the WBCA Division II national poll, won their eighth straight game and recorded their 32nd straight win against a west region opponent. SPU has also won 70 of its last 71 regular season games. The Broncos (7-2), who are ranked 12th nationally, dropped their second straight game.

Smith (Jr., Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian), who had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the first half alone, shot 8-for-13 from the field. Seven of her 18 boards, which was one short of matching her career best, came on the offensive end.

The Falcons scored the first basket of the game and led the entire way, but the Broncos throughout most of the contest behind star Candice Allen, who led all players with 30 points. SPU pulled ahead by nine, 24-15, just 10 minutes into the game, but Allen responded with a three pointer. Then, with 5:27 left in the half, Smith sank a free throw to put the Falcons up by 12, their largest lead up to that point. However, Allen scored on a lay-up and hit another trey to cap off a 7-0 run to bring the Broncos back to within five. The Falcons took a seven-point lead into the half.

Seattle Pacific started the second half on fire and built a 17-point lead with 13 minutes left to play. Again, Allen had an answer as her three-point play cut the deficit back down to 13 with 10 minutes remaining. Allen went on to score 11 of her team’s final 17 points, but SPU went on a late 14-6 run to put the game out of reach.

Amy Taylor (Sr., Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood) added 19 points and nine assists in the victory. Brittney Kroon (Jr., Wasilla, Ak.) chipped in 13 points, five rebounds and four blocks. Michelle Beaumont (Sr., Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) had 11 points and five assists in the win.

Allen shot 9-for-21 from the field and 10-of-13 from the free-throw line for the Broncos. Lauren Stayton was the only other Pomona player to score in double figures. She scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Falcons shot 47 percent for the game and held the Broncos to just 33 percent. SPU also outscored Pomona 25-0 on fast breaks and 46-24 in the paint. The Falcons next return to GNAC play at Humboldt State on Thursday (Jan. 6) at 7 p.m.

Taylor was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. She finished with a combined 36 points and 15 assists in the two games, both of them victories for SPU. Smith and Beaumont joined Taylor on the all-tournament team. Beaumont combined for 30 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Smith totaled 21 points, 27 rebounds and four steals.

Allen was an all-tournament selection for Pomona. She finished as the tournament’s leading scorer with a combined 53 points. Western Washington’s Tina Donohue and Jodi Gerald rounded out the all-tournament team after leading the Vikings to a pair of victories as GNAC schools finished a perfect 4-0 in the tournament.

Earlier in the day, Gerald scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Western Washington (9-1) to a 79-51 victory over Cal State LA (3-6), who finished 0-2 in the tournament. Donohue chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and three steals in the win. Courtney Clapp added 11 points and seven rebounds for WWU. Jaemy Oda led LA with 17 points, three assists and three steals as the only Golden Eagle to score in double figures. Tiffany Maddox had four points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
