SEATTLE (Dec. 29) – Michelle Beaumont led four Falcons in double figures with 19 points and SPU topped the century mark for the first time this season as Seattle Pacific used a late first-half rally to cruise to a 107-53 victory over Cal State LA in the opening day of the GNAC/CCAA Challenge on Wednesday at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (9-1), ranked fourth in the WBCA Division II national poll, recorded their seventh straight victory and their 69th win in their past 70 regular season games. The final margin of 54 points was the largest of the season for SPU, who came into the contest outscoring opponents by an average of 21 points per game. Cal State LA fell to 3-5 on the season.

Beaumont (Sr., Bellingham, Wa./Sehome), who scored 12 of her team-high 19 in the second half, shot 8-for-9 from the field, including 3-for-4 from behind the arc to match her season best point total. She also grabbed six rebounds. The Falcons outscored the Golden Eagles 59-26 in the second half alone.

Cal State LA opened with a three pointer to capture an early lead, but SPU pulled ahead 24-12 midway through the first half. The Golden Eagles narrowed the gap to three, 30-27, with 5:45 remaining until the break, but SPU did not allow a single point throughout the rest of the half to take control of the game.

Trisha Hermanson (Sr., Buckley, Wa./White River) drained a pair of three pointers and added a deuce as she scored the first eight points of an 18-0 SPU run to close the half that gave the Falcons a 21-point lead, 48-27 at the intermission.

Hermanson finished with a season-high 15 points in 15 minutes off the bench. She shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc and hit both free-throw attempts. Amy Taylor (Sr., Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood) added 17 points and six assists in the victory. Jenny Poe (Jr., Enumclaw, Wa.) poured in a career-high 16 points in 17 minutes off the bench for the Falcons.

SPU opened the second half right where it left off in the first. The Falcons outscored the Golden Eagles 11-1 in the first three minutes of the second frame and extended that into a 31-10 run to pull ahead by 42, 79-37 with 9:23 left to play. In that 16-minute span beginning near the end of the first half, SPU outscored Cal State LA 49-10.

Tiffaney Maddox led the Golden Eagles with 19 points. Charmaine Utz added 12 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

The Falcons converted 27 LA turnovers into 39 points and scored 33 points on fast break opportunities. SPU also outscored CSULA 50-30 in the paint. The Falcons shot 53 percent from the field, including a blistering 60 percent in the second half. SPU was also 12-for-22 (55 percent) from three-point range. Cal State LA shot just 34 percent from the field and 27 percent from behind the arc.

The Falcons face Cal Poly Pomona (7-1) tomorrow at 5 p.m. in the final day of the tournament. The Broncos suffered their first loss of the season to Western Washington (8-1) in the opening game (see recap below). Cal State LA will take on the Vikings of Western Washington at 1 p.m.
