Balanced Attack Leads SPU Women Past Anchorage in GNAC Opener

SEATTLE (Dec. 2) – Michelle Beaumont led five Falcons in double figures as Seattle Pacific opened Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with a 94-64 victory over Alaska Anchorage on Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (1-0 GNAC, 4-1) extended their conference winning streak to 43 games with their 18th straight regular season home victory. SPU has also won 35 straight home conference games. The Seawolves dropped to 0-1 in the GNAC and 1-3 overall.

Beaumont (Sr., Bellingham/Sehome) was nearly flawless from the field, shooting 6-for-8 from the field including 2-for-3 from three-point range and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. The Falcons shot 51.4 percent as a team.

SPU scored the first nine points of the game, getting baskets from four different players, and led the entire way. Anchorage answered with a 7-1 run to close the gap to 10-7, but the Falcons fired back with a 21-4 run to go up by 20, 31-11, with 5:14 left in the first half.

The Seawolves never got closer than 14 the rest of the way as SPU went up by as much as 31.

Brittney Kroon (Jr., Wasilla, Ak.) added 13 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots in the win. Amy Taylor (Sr., Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood) and Mandy Wood (Jr., Port Angeles, Wa.) each scored 11. Rachel Strand (So., Shoreline, Wa./King’s) chipped in with 10 points in 15 minutes off the bench. Wood added eight assists and two steals to her point total.

Carli Smith (Jr., Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) was the only SPU starter to not score in double figures, but she pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with four points. Jenny Poe (Jr., Enumclaw, Wa.) scored nine in a balanced SPU attack.

Taylor Long sparked Anchorage with a game-high 20 points. Tenecia Mason added 10 points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench in the loss. Cassie Bro scored 12 for the Seawolves.

Seattle Pacific dominated inside, owning a 45-26 advantage in rebounds, including 18-5 on the offensive glass. The Falcons also forced 26 turnovers in the contest.

The Falcons host Alaska Fairbanks in a GNAC game on Saturday at 5 pm.
