GRAND FORKS, N.D (Nov. 27) Michelle
Beaumont scored a game-high 19 points, and Brittney Kroon was two
rebounds shy of a triple-double as Seattle Pacific defeated
Bemidji State 76-56 in the final day of the Betty Engelstad
Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by the University of North Dakota on
Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons (3-1) responded from their first
regular season loss in nearly three years yesterday to finish the
tournament 1-1. Bemidji State (2-3) finished with an 0-2 record.
Beaumont (Sr., Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) scored
her 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 4-for-6 from
three-point range and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.
Kroon (Jr., Wasilla, Ak.) finished with 16 points, eight rebounds
and a whopping 11 blocked shots. She was just two shy of her
school and league record of 13 blocks set last season.
After the Beavers tied the score just over a
minute into the second half, Kroon converted a three-point play
and Beaumont buried a shot from behind the arc to give SPU its
largest lead of the game to that point. Six minutes later, Kroon
gave Seattle Pacific its first double-digit lead of the game,
54-43, with 10:45 remaining.
The Beavers climbed back to within seven with
9:08 left to play, but Beaumont scored five straight points to
catalyze a 12-2 SPU run that was capped off by a Kroon basket to
put the Falcons on top 68-51 with just over four minutes left in
the contest. Kroon had 11 points, five rebounds and seven blocks
in the second half alone to help SPU pull away.
Autumn Fielding (So., Kennewick, Wa.) had 11
points and four rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench in the
victory as she outscored Bemidji States bench all by
herself. The Falcon reserves scored 25 points. The Beavers got
just six points off the bench.
Maggie Gernbacher was the lone offensive bright
spot for Bemidji State. She had 18 points and four rebounds.
Allison Sanderberg scored nine points, and Amy Lawson and Nancy
McConkey each had eight.
SPU shot 47 percent in the game and held
Bemidji State to just 31 percent, including 22 percent in the
second half. The Beavers were also just 4-of-21 (19 percent) from
three-point range.
The Falcons open Great Northwest Athletic
Conference play next week when they host Alaska Anchorage on
Thursday night (Dec. 2) at 5:30 pm.
