GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Nov. 26) Ashley
Langen scored 20 of her game-high 35 points in the second half as
North Dakota pulled away to knock off Seattle Pacific 85-73 in a
national showdown on Friday evening in the opening day of the
North Dakota Classic.
The Falcons (2-1), ranked No. 3 in the Womens
Basketball Coaches Association national poll, suffered their first
loss of the season and had their regular season winning streak of
62 games snapped. SPUs last regular season loss came during
the 2001-02 season. Seventh-ranked North Dakota improved to 4-1.
Langen scored five points during a 15-0 North
Dakota run midway through the second half that gave the Fighting
Sioux a 67-51 lead with 8:47 left to play. SPU pulled back to
within as many as eight three times, but North Dakota held on for
the win in its own tournament.
Amy Taylor (Sr., Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood) had
team highs of 20 points and six rebounds to lead the Falcons.
Carli Smith (Jr., Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) had 16 points and
four rebounds to helps spark the Falcons in the comeback effort.
Rachel Strand (So., Shoreline, Wa./Kings) chipped in 13
points and four rebounds in the loss.
Langen shot 13-of-19 from the field and 9-of-11
from the free-throw line. She also had seven rebounds. Kristi Bose
had 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in the win. Kelsey
Maffin chipped in 12 points in 16 minutes off the bench.
SPU led by seven with 12:51 left in the first
half, but the Sioux stormed back to pull ahead by 15 with 2:42 to
go. SPU went on an 11-0 run to get back into the game and faced
just a 41-37 deficit at the break.
The Falcons got back to within one, 52-51, on a
mid-range jumper by Smith with 12:32 left in the game. But North
Dakota put the game away with a 15-0 run to pull ahead 67-51 with
8:47 remaining. SPU was able to cut the gap to single digits on
four separate occasions, but never got closer than eight.
Seattle Pacific, who had a combined 59-2 record
over the past two seasons, fell for the first time during the
regular season since a 102-87 loss at Western Washington on Feb.
