SEATTLE (Nov. 20) Jordan Lee sank a
go-ahead three-pointer with 51 seconds left and Jason Chivers
scored 19 points and hauled down 17 rebounds as Seattle Pacific
University posted its first win, 84-80 over Chico State in the
final game of the Sodexho Tip-Off Classic Saturday night at
Brougham Pavilion.
Lee¹s 20-footer from the left side gave
the Falcons (1-1) an 82-80 lead. The Wildcats¹ (1-1) Tim
Haley tried to answer with a trey at the other end but it rimmed
out and Chivers snared the rebound. Lee took the oulet, was fouled
and hit one free throw. Another miss by Haley was brought down by
Chivers (Sr., 6-8, Los Angeles, Ca.), who also hit one of two from
the line with 11 seconds left.
The two teams had traded three-pointers and the
lead much of the second half. Tony Binetti (Jr., 6-1, Enumclaw,
Wa.) canned a game-tying trey, then made a steal, layup and free
throw for an SPU edge of 79-77. Scott Land gave Chico its final
lead, 80-79, on a three-pointer with 1:21 left.
Land topped the visitors with 17 points while
Andy Butcher added 15, hitting 5 of 8 threes.
Chivers, working mostly inside, scored 13 of
his points in the second half. Fifteen of his board came at the
defensive end and he also blocked four shots. Lee (Sr., 6-1,
Tacoma, Wa./Life Christian) scored 15 for the Falcons, making
three treys and Binetti totaled 14 points10 in the second
halfplus seven assists.
Seattle Pacific, which was 11-24 outside the
arc, built a 10-point cushion late in the first half following a
trey by Jeff Knudson (Jr., 6-7, Mukilteo, Wa./Kamiak), a
three-point play by Lee and a layup by Binetti. But Chico
retaliated with the final six points of the half, cutting it to
45-41.
The Falcons, winning their home opener for the
third year in a row shot 50 percent from the field (30-60) but
committed 18 turnovers to the Wildcats¹ six.
SPU resumes play Thanksgiving night in Hilo,
Hi., against Hillsdale (Mi.).
