SEATTLE (Nov. 19) Nationally-ranked
Seattle Pacific University tipped off the 2004-05 season in fine
fashion, as the Falcons knocked off visiting Warner Pacific 79-45
in the first day of the Sodexho Tip-Off Classic on Friday night at
Brougham Pavilon.
Seattle Pacific (1-0), ranked No. 3 in the
Womens Basketball Coaches Association national preseason
poll, ran its consecutive regular-season winning streak to 61
games, dating back to the 2001-02 campaign. The Falcons also
recorded their 16th straight home win. Warner Pacific dropped to
0-2 on the season.
True freshman Quinn Brewe (Lynnwood,
Wa./Meadowdale) started her college career in excellent form. Last
years class 3A state player of the year, Brewe poured in 12
points on 5-for-8 shooting and hauled in 11 rebounds in a starting
role. Mandy Wood (Jr., Port Angeles, Wa.) led the SPU attack with
14 points to go along with five rebounds.
After a sluggish start in which the Falcons
shot just 31 percent in the first half, Seattle Pacific turned it
on after intermission. Wood drained a three pointer and followed
with a tip-in basket to key a 9-0 SPU run that extended the
Falcons lead to 21 points (47-26) with 13:07 left in the
game. Seattle Pacific never looked back from there.
Jenny Poe (Jr., Enumclaw, Wa.) came off the
bench to lead all scorers with 10 points and six rebounds. Carli
Smith (Jr., Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) chipped in six points
and 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive end, in 14 minutes
off the bench. Autumn Fielding (So., Kennewick, Wa.) and Amy
Taylor (Sr., Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood) scored eight points apiece.
WPUs Angie Sun led all scorers with 15
points in the losing effort, but did not receive much help from
any of her teammates. Katie Dinneen added seven points as the only
other Warner Pacific player to score more than four.
The Falcons dominated the battle of the boards,
more than doubling the Knights 57-28, including 22-6 on the
offensive glass. The Falcons shot 38 percent in the contest and
held Warner Pacific to just 30 percent shooting. SPU forced 20
turnovers in the contest.
The Falcons host George Fox in the final day of
the tournament tomorrow at 5 pm.
