Falcons Men Hang Tough With 22nd-Ranked Huskies in Opener
November 19, 2004

Complete Box Score

SEATTLE (Nov. 19) – Brandon Roy and Nate Robinson combined for 45 points as 22nd-ranked Washington dealt Seattle Pacific University an 89-71 defeat in the opening game of the men’s basketball season Friday night before 9,851 at Bank of America Arena.

Jordan Lee (Sr., 6-1, Tacoma, Wa./Life Christian) drilled 6-of-7 three pointers and answered with 22 points for the Falcons, who were facing the Huskies for the first time in 23 years.

Washington put together three runs before and after halftime to build a comfortable, 26-point cushion going into the final four minutes. A 10-0 burst punctuated by a Joel Smith steal and stuff effectively sealed the outcome, making it 61-37 with 11:51 left. The visitors got no closer than 17 the rest of the way.

Robinson sank 11-12 free throws and Roy made 10-15 from the field. Inside, Mike Jensen’s 13 rebounds (eight offensive) gave the UW a huge 42-28 advantage. Jensen finished with 14 points, nearly all coming off second-chance shots.

Jason Chivers (Sr., 6-8, Los Angeles, Ca.), after a quiet first half, scored 15 of his 17 after the break. Jeff Knudson (Jr., 6-7, Mukilteo, Wa./Kamiak) added 10 off the bench.

Washington, missing two starters and two key reserves due to NCAA one-game suspensions, forced 20 turnovers with its pressure defense and SPU could not find its shooting stroke until it was too late. Seattle Pacific, after scoring just 23 first-half points, shot 52 percent in the second period.

SPU stayed with Washington for the first eight minutes before the Huskies capitalized on turnovers and offensive boards to take a 25-15 lead. Smith came off the bench for five of his 15 points during an 11-3 run, with Smith connecting from the right corner for the final three.

Lee brought the Falcons back to 31-23, going behind a screen to hit his third trey. But Jensen’s persistence on the glass resulted in two tips in the final two minutes of the half, after which the UW led 38-23.

The Falcons host Chico State in their home opener Saturday night at 7 in the final game of the Sodexho Tip-Off Classic.
