Box Score

SEATTLE (Nov. 19) – Scott Land scored five of his game-high 23 points in overtime, including the clinching free throw, as Chico State held off a late rally by Northwest Nazarene for a 91-89 overtime victory in the Sodexho Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Seattle Pacific on Friday night at Brougham Pavilion.

Land hit 1-of-2 free throws with 11 second left to put Chico (1-0) on top 90-87. The Wildcats then fouled with just under five seconds remaining to avoid giving up the three pointer. NNU’s David Lehrschall sank both free throws to pull the Crusaders (0-1) back to within one.

Chico’s Andy Butcher hit 1-of-2 free throws to make it 91-89 with four seconds left to play. NNU nearly pulled off the shocker, but Lehrschall’s desperation attempt from 35 feet out as the buzzer sounded rattled in and out of the rim.

The Crusaders, who led by as much as 10 in the first half, fell behind by 10 with four minutes left to play. They held Chico State without a field goal and a total of just one point over the final four minutes of regulation during an 11-1 run to force overtime.

Land, who was one of five Chico players in double figures, also had eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win. Chuck Webster had 17 points, and Jason Van Eck finished with 13 points and eight boards.

Ryan McCarthy led NNU with 18 points. Travis Fridrich had 15 points and nine rebounds.

Northwest Nazarene shot 25-for-26 from the free-throw line during regulation, but went just 3-for-6 in overtime in the loss. Chico was a dismal 20-for-36 from the charity stripe. A total of 58 fouls were whistled in the game. Chico State also forced 29 turnovers.
