Postseason hopes take blow in loss to Seattle U.
November 13, 2004

Complete Match Stats

SEATTLE (Nov. 13) Seattle Pacific's late-season surge into NCAA II playoff consideration took a serious blow on Saturday night as the Falcons fell 3-1 to cross-city rival Seattle University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball action at SU's Connolly Center. It was the final regular season match for both teams.

After splitting the first-two games, the Redhawks (12-6 GNAC, 14-12) outlasted the Falcons (11-7 GNAC, 15-11) in game three and carried that momentum to a 25-30, 30-19, 30-28, 30-25 victory. The loss snapped a four-match winning streak for Seattle Pacific, who entered the week ranked 12th in the region after winning eight of its previous 10 matches. With only eight regional playoff berths available, the Falcons will be a long shot when the tournament field is selected tomorrow by the NCAA committee.

Alyssa Given (Fr., Salinas, Ca./Notre Dame) and Chelsey Myers (Jr., Minden, Nv./Douglas) shared team-high honors with 16 kills apiece in the loss. Myers also had 22 digs and Given added 11 along with four service aces. Kathleen Monda (Sr., Woodinville, Wa.) chipped in 10 kills and 23 digs in the loss. Tiffany Butac (So., pearl City, Ha./Hawaii Baptist) led all players with 27 digs.

Sarah Sommerman led the Redhawks with 20 kills. Megan Kaysinger chipped in 14. Amelie Krahn added 13 kills and six blocks, and Lizzy Safranski finished with 12 kills, 17 digs and six blocks.

The Redhawks beat the Falcons at their own game for the victory. Seattle Pacific leads the GNAC in blocks and opponents' hitting percentage, but SU turned the tables by out-blocking SPU 12-4 and finishing with a .219 hitting percentage.
