Coggan Hat Trick Spurs SPU to 4-1 Win Over Chico
October 27, 2004

SEATTLE (Oct. 27) -- James Coggan came off the bench to score three goals as 18th-ranked Seattle Pacific University coasted to a 4-1 non-conference men's soccer win over Chico State at Interbay Stadium Wednesday night.

Andy Willis (So., Gig Harbor, Wa.) also scored for the Falcons (12-2-2), who are unbeaten in their last four games.

Coggan (Fr., San Jose, Ca.) entered the game in the 20th minute and broke a scoreless deadlock with 3:25 left in the first half. He took a errant defensive clearance on the left wing and sprinted 35 yards into the box before blasting an 8-yard shot under Wildcats goalie Scott Doty.

David Selby (Sr, Aloha, Or.) set-up the next two SPU goals. Selby drove a low cross through the crease which Nick Letts (Jr., Dublin, Ca.) flicked to the far post for a wide-open Coggan to bury from 10 yards in the 56th minute. Selby come down the right flank again 10 minutes later. Brent Egbert (Sr., Bellingham, Wa/Sehome) took Selby's feed and laid it back to Willis to slot into an empty net from 18 yards for a 3-0 lead.

Coggan completed his hat trick in the 72 minute, running on to Nate Elmenhurst¹s (Fr., Bothell, Wa./Woodinville) through pass and scoring from 12 yards. It was the fifth goal of the season for both Coggan and Willis.

Chico State (6-9-4) averted a shutout in the 88th minute. Chris Wondolowski finished a cross from Jason Phillips at the near post, beating SPU back-up keeper Kellen Rosten. Seattle Pacific took out most of its starters with 20 minutes remaining.

Egbert nearly put SPU on top in the game¹s first five minutes, but Doty came sliding out to block the ball at his feet. Egbert was denied by Doty again three minutes later, when the keeper tipped away a Letts cross with Egbert lurking in front of the net. Doty leaped to flip a Letts header over the bar in the 12th minute.

Phillips fired a 15-yard try off the right post in the 30th minute for Chico State¹s first clear opportunity.

SPU resumes Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at top-ranked Seattle University.
