SEATTLE (Oct. 22) Nick Letts came off
the bench to score one goal and create another as 18th-ranked
Seattle Pacific University downed Grand Canyon 3-1 in a
non-conference men¹s soccer game Friday night at Interbay
Stadium.
Suad Krkic (Jr., Bellevue, Wa./Interlake-BCC)
scored what proved the game-winning goal and James Coggan (Fr.,
San Jose, Ca.) provided insurance with a late tally for the
Falcons (11-2-2), who got all three of their goals from
non-starters.
After numerous SPU near-misses, Letts (Jr.,
Dublin, Ca.) finally broke the scoring ice in the 59th minute.
Jeff Hallenbeck (Fr., Redmond, Wa./Inglemoor) crossed the ball
from the right and Letts was waiting at the far post for a 6-yard
header.
Five minutes later, Krkic collected a loose
ball, pushed it to the right and found the far corner with a 12
yard kick past Canyon keeper Byron Bent at 63:53. It was his first
goal of the season.
Grand Canyon (3-13-1), which had won three in a
row, pulled a goal back in the 70th minute. On just the Lopes¹
fourth shot of the game, Ugljesa Vrbica scored from 10 yards,
making it 2-1.
But Coggan put the game out of reach with 9:06
remaining. Alone on the left side of the box, he took a Letts
passs and buried it in the right corner. Ross Vaillancourt (Jr.,
Bedford, NH) also assisted on the play.
Seattle Pacific out-shot GCU 23-6, with three
shots hitting the right goalpost and another, by Vaillancourt,
being saved off the line by a defender. Letts smacked a shot off
the post in the 47th minute, followed by David Smith doing it
again 10 minutes later. Tyler Falco fired from 22 yards off the
upright with 4 minutes left.
Seattle Pacific concludes its three-game home
stand Wednesday night by hosting Chico State at 7.
