SEASIDE, Calif. (Oct. 11) Top-ranked
Seattle Pacific University got a first-half goal from Michelle
Sanders and went on to post its sixth straight shutout win, 3-0
over Cal State Monterey Bay in a women¹s non-conference
soccer game Monday.
Sarah Martinez (Fr., Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park
Christian) and Theresa Morelli (So., Bellevue, Wa./Bellevue,
Christian) scored in the second half as the Falcons remained
unbeaten (12-0-1).
The six straight shutouts ties an SPU record
set last season. Jennifer Hull (Sr., Eugene, Or.) made three saves
to earn her seventh shutout of the season.
Sanders (Sr., Centralia, Wa.) opened the
scoring in the 24th minute with her 25th career goal. Michelle
Everson (Jr., Tacoma, Wa./Stadium) sent ball into the box on the
setup.
The Otters (1-11-1) kept it close until
Martinez drove home her team-leading seventh goal for a 2-0 lead
in the 68th minute after a cross by Tricia Loomis (Fr., Des
Moines, Wa./Mt. Rainier) and nodded down by Sarah Melby (Sr.,
Mukilteo, Wa./Kamiak). It was the fifth goal in the last six games
for Martinez.
Morelli finished a pass from Shannon Lovejoy
(Jr., Seattle, Wa./Seattle Prep) with 90 seconds left for the
final margin.
SPU dominated play, finishing with a 13-4
advantage in shots and 7-1 in corner kicks. The scoreless streak
for the defense reached 593 minutes. The school record is 649, set
last year. Only two goals have been allowed in the first 13 games.
The Falcons, in the midst of six consecutive
games on the road, resume Great Northwest Athletic Conference play
Wednesday at Northwest Nazarene.
