SEATTLE (Oct. 2) -- Shannon Lovejoy set-up one
goal and scored the other as No. 2-ranked Seattle Pacific
University remained unbeaten with a 2-0 Great Northwest Athletic
Conference women's soccer win over Humboldt State at Interbay
Stadium Saturday.
Jessica Henson (Sr., Spokane, Wa./University)
also scored for the Falcons (4-0-1/10-0-1), who could move up to
No. 1 in NCAA Division II this week following a loss by top-rated
Franklin Pierce (NH). Jennifer Hull (Sr., Eugene, Or.) made one
save in posting her fifth shutout and the team's eighth.
SPU has now won four in a row overall, 22
straight at home and is unbeaten in its last 25 GNAC games over
three seasons.
Both goals came within a 3-minute span of the
first half. Lovejoy (Jr., Seattle, Wa.)served a long cross from
the left wing into an unmarked Henson, who headed into an open net
from 4 yards at 15:03. Later, a corner kick by Michelle Everson
(Jr., Tacoma, Wa./Stadium) caromed off the crossbar for Lovejoy to
score from close range on the rebound at 17:39. It was Lovejoy's
fourth goal of the season.
Everson also hit the crossbar on a second-half
corner kick.
Although the Lumberjacks (2-3-0/7-4-1) were
out-shot 21-3, they stayed in the game through seven saves by
goalie Staci Self. Humboldt nearly pulled a goal back in the 60th
minute. Jessica Hewins fired a 16-yard shot off the crossbar. The
ball bounced down just in front of the goal line and Katie
Coppoletta's rebound attempt was caught cleanly by Hull.
Seattle Pacific plays its next six games on the
road, beginning Saturday against Cal State San Bernardino at
Seaside, Ca.
