SEATTLE (Oct. 2) Mallory Bergstrom had
match highs of 26 kills and 22 digs to lead visiting Alaska
Fairbanks past Seattle Pacific 3-1 in Great Northwest Athletic
Conference volleyball action on Saturday night at Brougham
Pavilion.
In a back and forth match that saw 34 tied
scores and 22 lead changes, the Nanooks (4-4 GNAC, 7-8) came from
behind to defeat the Falcons (3-4 GNAC, 7-8) 25-30, 30-27, 30-23,
30-24.
Bergstrom seemed to come up with the clutch
play to thwart every SPU rally and lift the Nanooks when they were
struggling. She also had five blocks and led all players with four
service aces, tallying a match-high 33 points.
Jessica Bauder (Sr., Richland, Wa.) led the SPU
effort with 10 kills, 14 digs and seven blocks Chelsey Myers (Jr.,
Minden, Nv./Douglas) also had 10 kills, along with a team-high 20
digs and three blocks.. Jenna Von Moos (So., Stanwood, Wa.)
chipped in four kills, 27 assists, 14 digs, three service aces and
three blocks.
Rachel Biornstad(Fr., Kent, Wa./Kentlake) added
eight kills and six blocks for SPU. Katie Ralph (Jr., Port
Orchard, Wa./South Kitsap) had six kills and seven blocks.
Seattle Pacific held late leads in all four
games, only to watch Fairbanks rally in the final three behind a
dominant individual performance by Bergstrom. The Falcons captured
a 21-20 lead in the fourth game, but Bergstrom responded with four
of her 10 game-four kills to help UAF close the match.
The Falcons hit for a negative percentage in
games two and three and finished at just .006 for the match. The
Nanooks hit at a .110 clip, but that was heavily inflated by a
.300 performance in game four. Those low numbers were reflected by
dominant blocking by both teams. SPU finished with a season-high
18.5 blocks. UAF recorded 16, its second best performance of the
season.
In the pivotal game three, SPU was on top 23-20
and threatening to capture a 2-1 lead in the match. Fairbanks won
the next 10 points, nine of them on Bergstroms serves, who
closed the game with three straight aces.
Seattle Pacific captured a 26-23 lead in the
second game, but a kill by Bergstrom led to three straight
Fairbanks points. The Nanooks fell behind 27-26, but fired back
with four straight to close out the game. In game one, it was the
Falcons who overcame a late deficit, climbing back from a 22-20
hole to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.
Danielle Hitzeman was also in double figures
for the Nanooks with 13 kills, 11 digs and five block assists.
Carlin Smith added eight kills and four blocks. Crystal Wheelock
matched Bergstroms match-high with 22 digs. Dasa Capova led
all players with 46 assists along with 16 digs.
The Falcons hit the road for two straight
matches, beginning Thursday at Western Oregon in GNAC action at
7:00 pm.
