Smith's Goal Lifts No. 10 SPU Men to 7th-Straight Win
Falcons get 3-2 decision over Humboldt State
October 2, 2004

SEATTLE (Oct. 2) David Smith's second-half header lifted No. 10-ranked Seattle Pacific University to its seventh straight win, 3-2 over Humboldt State in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Saturday at Interbay Stadium.

Brent Egbert (Sr., Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) continued his scoring tear, hitting the net twice in the first half for the Falcons (2-0-0/9-1-1), who are unbeaten in 10 games. Egbert has 11 goals for the season, and has contributed either a goal or assist in the last nine consecutive matches.

Smith (Sr., Corvallis, Or.) leaped to head home a free kick from Michael Morris (So., Bothell, Wa./Blanchet) from 8 yards in the 56th minute. It was the defender's third game-wining goal of the season, all coming in the last five games.

The game's first three goals were scored in a span of less than three minutes. After Humboldt's Trel Mangarin opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, Egbert found the net twice in 22 seconds. He scored from 12 yards off an assist by James Coggan (Fr., SanJose, Ca.) and then from 15 yards from Matt Kemper (Fr., Colorado Springs, Co.).

The Lumberjacks' Ryan Parker converted a penalty kick at 30:26 for a 2-2 halftime count. Mangarin's goal came after he outaced two defenders and SPU keeper James Ward to a long upfield pass by Jonathan Eseman in the left side of the box. Mangarin scored into an empty net from 10 yards.

Seattle Pacific out-shot the visitors 18-11, with Coggan nearly putting in another goal on a header with 30 minutes left. Brett Schwerin caught the ball near the crossbar.

Play became physical in the second half particularly. A total of 29 fouls were whistled after halftime, when five of the six yellow cards were issued.

SPU hosts Seattle University in a matchup of top-10 teams Friday night at 7.
