MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Sept. 18) David
Smith's 40-yard blast with 54 seconds remaining in overtime lifted
18th-ranked Seattle Pacific to a 3-2 victory over No. 15 Barry in
a non-conference men's soccer game at Buccaneer Field Tuesday
night.
It was the fourth straight win for the Falcons
(6-1-1), who extended their unbeaten string to seven games. They
conclude a seven-game, 25-day road trip Friday night at Fort
Lauderdale against Nova Southeastern.
Brent Egbert (Sr., Bellingham, Wa./Sehome)
added a goal and an assist, giving him six goals and three assists
during the unbeaten run . Andy Willis (So., Gig Harbor, Wa.) got
the other SPU goal.
Smith's (Sr., Corvallis, Or.) long-range blast
into the upper left corner at 109:06 gave Seattle Pacific its
first win over a ranked opponent this season. Barry(4-2-0) had
twice tied the game in the second half. Both teams played
short-handed for the final 57 minutes due to ejections.
Egbert's rebound goal in the 26th minute gave
the visitors a 1-0 lead at halftime. Michael Morris (So., Bothell,
Wa./Blanchet) hit the initial shot, which was saved by Buccaneer
goalie Chris Rich. Morris and Barry's Kiriakos Michailidis
received red cards at 62:45.
After Mahlon Sullivan knotted the score at 1-1,
Willis flicked in a cross from Egbert at 72:44. MikeLupton of the
Bucs sent the match in overtime with a header at 85:18.
It was the third meeting between the two teams
since Steve McCrath became head coach at Barry. Cliff McCrath, his
father, is in his 35th year as SPU coach. Seattle Pacific has won
two of the encounters.
