4th-Ranked Falcon Women and No. 11 Seattle Play to 1-1 Soccer Tie
September 18, 2004

SEATTLE, Wa. (Sept. 18)—Heidi Jacobson scored in the 46th-minute to knot the score at 1-1, but the Falcons were not able to hit a game-winner as 4th-ranked Seattle Pacific University tied No. 11 Seattle University 1-1 in overtime, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s soccer match Saturday afternoon at Championship Field.

With the tie, Seattle Pacific (6-0-1) remained unbeaten in its last 22 conference games, a streak that dates back to 2002. The Falcons were picked to successfully defend their GNAC title in a preseason coaches’ poll; Seattle University was picked to finish a close second.

Jacobson (Jr., Kirkland, Wa./Cedar Park Christian) found the back of the Redhawk net 36-seconds into the second half of play off a cross from the left-side off the foot of teammate Michelle Sanders (Sr., Centralia, Wa.). The goal represented Jacobson’s second of 2004 and marked Sanders’ second assist and team-leading 10th point.

The Redhawks got on the scoreboard first, off a 16-yard strike by Katy Mak. SU midfielder Tafara Pulse started off the play near midfield by splitting two SPU defenders and dishing the ball to teammate Cassy Smith, streaking down the left sideline. Smith pushed the ball forward to Mak, who beat Falcon keeper Jennifer Hull (Sr., Eugene, Or./Sheldon) to the right post to make it 1-0.

Both Seattle Pacific and the Redhawks (6-0-2) had several chances to win the game over the course of the second half and both overtime periods, but neither team was able to capitalize.

SPU out-shot Seattle University 16-13 as Redhawk keeper Kelly Stewart saved eight balls including three in the two overtime periods. Hull registered three.

Corner kicks were nearly even, at a 4-3 SPU advantage. The Falcons fouled 21 times to SU’s 15.

The Falcons play next on Wednesday night in a non-conference contest against Montana State Billings at Interbay where they have won their last 19 matches in a row. Kick-off is scheduled for 7p.m. Seattle Pacific resumes GNAC play Saturday night (Sept. 25) against Western Oregon.
