Falcon Men Edge Tampa for Third-Straight Soccer Win
September 18, 2004

MIAMI (Sept. 18) David Smith's goal following a 40-minute lightning delay lifted No. 24 Seattle Pacific University to a come-from-behind, 2-1 men's soccer win over Tampa Saturday.

Nick Letts (Jr., Dublin, Ca.) got the other goal for the Falcons (5-1-1), who won their third in a row and are now unbeaten in their last six outings.

Letts scored his second goal of the season at 66:08, turning on pass from Brent Egbert (Sr., Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) and finishing from 6 yards to tie the score at 1-1.

A downpour and lightning forced the game to be suspended in the 74th minute. Shortly after play resumed, with 15:12 remaining on the clock, Michael Morris (So., Bothell, Wa./Blanchet) hit a free kick to James Coggan (Fr., San Jose, Ca.). A cross by Coggan found Smith (Sr., Corvallis, Or.) at the far post where he redirected the ball into the net with his chest.

Although SPU dominated play early, Tampa struck first with Justin Aulls punctuating a long run by burying a 30-yard shot in the net at 53:34. The Falcons finished with an 18-9 advantage in shots over the Spartans (2-3-0) and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

Egbert's assist on the first goal extended his point scoring streak to five games. He had scored in the previous three matches. Jeremy Bonner (Jr., Sammamish, Wa./Eastlake) also assisted on the team's first goal.

Seattle Pacific's seven-game road trip resumes Tuesday in Miami when the Falcons visit No. 18 Barry.
