4th-Ranked SPU Women Win 19th at Interbay, Down Western 2-1
September 15, 2004

SEATTLE, Wa. (Sept. 15)—Sarah Melby scored her first goal of the season and Jessica Henson hit the game-winner ten minutes into the second half, as 4th-ranked Seattle Pacific University downed Western Washington 2-1 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer match at Interbay Stadium.

The win was Seattle Pacific’s 19th in a row on its home turf of Interbay Stadium. The Falcons have not lost a GNAC game in their last 20 tries. Both streaks date back to 2002.

Melby (Sr., Mukilteo, Wa./Kamiak) opened up scoring in the match by heading a Michelle Everson (Jr., Tacoma, Wa./Stadium) corner kick past Viking keeper Theresa Fish from six-yards out (36:45).

At 40:39, the Vikings responded. Midfielder Amanda Font looped a pass toward Seattle Pacific’s goal from near the half-line. Falcon keeper Jennifer Hull (Sr., Eugene, Or./Sheldon) rushed to the top of the goal box and batted the pass away from three Vikings. The ball skipped to WWU forward Chela Gray, who controlled and shot the ball into a virtually open net from 10-yards.

Western nearly earned a lead at 53:10 as Anna Smits beat an SPU defender and ripped a shot from near the corner of the box, toward the goal's upper left corner. Hull made a diving save and tipped the ball just past the post to preserve the tie.

Just under two minutes later, Jessica Henson (Sr., Spokane, Wa./University) booted home the game-winner. Forward Michelle Sanders (Sr., Centralia, Wa.) crossed the ball from the right-side end-line to midfielderShannon Lovejoy (Jr., Seattle, Wa./Seattle Prep.). Lovejoy trapped and tried to slip Sanders' pass to the left post, but Fish was able to get a hand on the shot for the save. Henson pounced on the rebound and hit net from ten-yards for the final margin.

With the victory, Seattle Pacific (6-0) maintained its perfect record while Western dropped to 3-3. SPU out-shot the Vikings 10-8, and held an eight to two advantage on corner kicks. Both Hull and Fish registered four saves apiece.

The Falcons travel across town to take on No. 10 Seattle University Saturday afternoon in a GNAC match. Kick-off is scheduled for 1o’clock.
