ROHNERT PARK, Calif. (Sept. 6) Brent
Egbert¹s goal with 29 minutes left in the second half earned
Seattle Pacific University a 1-1 draw with host Sonoma State in
the title game of the Seawolf Classic men¹s soccer tournament
Monday.
Both teams were unable to score the rest of the
way, including 20 minutes of overtime, in blistering conditions
which reached 102 degrees at the field. The Falcons (2-1-1) are
now unbeaten in their last three games.
Early in the second period, Sonoma State
(2-0-1) struck first when Brian Coyne won a ball in front of the
SPU bench, went directly to goal and then drilled a 30-yard shot
which James Ward (Sr., Salem, Or.) deflected but could not keep
from skipping into the net.
After a score by Michael Morris (So., Bothell,
Wa./Blanchet) just seconds after the Coyne goal was called back
for offside, Morris set-up the tying goal at 61:36. Egbert (Sr.,
Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) scored in his second straight game. Later,
he was denied by Seawolf goalie Clark Rupp from close range.
Ward, who had not allowed a goal in the
previous two outings, preserved the draw by stopping Coyne from 8
yards late in the second half.
Seattle Pacific finished with a 17-16 edge in
shots and 9-7 in corner kicks. Ward made three saves and Rupp 7.
