22nd-Ranked Falcon Women Overwhelm Pomona
August 30, 2004

SEATTLE (Aug. 30) –Megan Lienhard scored twice and Shannon Lovejoy netted a goal and an assist as 22nd-ranked Seattle Pacific University overwhelmed Cal Poly Pomona 4-0 in a non-conference women’s soccer match Monday night at Interbay Stadium.

Lovejoy (Jr., Seattle, Wa./Seattle Prep.) opened up scoring in the match early (8:16), heading a Michelle Everson (Jr., Tacoma, Wa./Stadium) free-kick taken from 40-yards out on the left side past starting keeper Vanessa Richardson to the left corner of the net.

Less than two minutes later (10:00), Lienhard (Jr., Everett, Wa./Cascade) took a slot pass from Jessica Henson (Sr., Spokane, Wa./University) 12-yards in front of the Bronco goal and drilled it to the left post. Sarah Martinez (Fr., Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park Christian) gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead at 32:25 off a Lovejoy assist just before intermission.

Pomona’s best chance came in the middle of the second half. At 78;40, Kristi Ibello put a head on a Bronco free kick taken near midfield and drilled the ball at SPU keeper Jennifer Hull )Sr., Eugene, Or./Sheldon). The senior batted the ball away, and it was eventually cleared by a Seattle Pacific defender.

The Falcons finished with a 16-8 advantage in shots and earned four corner kicks to Cal Poly Pomona’s three. Hull registered a pair of saves in goal while Pomona keepers Richardson and Kimberly Weiss shared four.

Lienhard’s final strike at 69:08 was assisted by forward Michelle Sanders (Sr., Centralia, Wa.).

The win marked the Falcons’ 17th straight at their home field of Interbay, a streak that dates back to 2002. Seattle Pacific (2-0) enjoys a few days rest before finishing out a three-game home stand with a match against Chico State Saturday night. Kick-off is scheduled for 7p.m.
