Morris, Ward Combine to Earn Falcon Men First Win
August 30, 2004

SEATTLE (Aug. 30) Michael Morris connected on a free kick with 20 minutes remaining and goalie James Ward made a crucial saves with 8 minutes to go, lifting Seattle Pacific University to a 1-0 non-conference men's soccer victory over Cal Poly Pomona at Interbay Stadium Monday afternoon.

The goal by Morris (So., Bothell, Wa./Blanchet) was the Falcons' (1-1-0) first of the season as they posted their 11th win in 12 meetings with the Broncos (1-2-0).

On a direct kick, Morris curled a 25-yard shot around the wall and inside the near post at 69:33.

Cal Poly nearly equalized in the 72nd minute. Dustin Suppe drifted behind the defense, receiving a ball unmarked, 16 yards out from the left post. His shot sent Ward (Sr., Salem, Or.) diving to his left, first to parry and then to gather before the Broncos' Peter Hazdovac pounced on the rebound.

Earlier in the second half, Cal Poly missed a chance to score first when Robert Cardenas missed wide right from 15 yards on a breakaway. Seattle Pacific's Jeff Hallenbeck (Fr., Redmond, Wa./Inglemoor) was denied by CPP keeper Tim Sisk at the left post in the 48th minute.

A total of 54 fouls were whistled in the game, and Hazdovac was ejected with 37 seconds remaining for earning his second yellow card.
