SEATTLE (Aug. 28) Kei Kamara's
second-half goal provided the only scoring as 9th-ranked Cal State
Dominguez Hills weathered a late flurry of chances by Seattle
Pacific University to win 1-0 in a non-conference men's soccer
game at Interbay Stadium Saturday night.
The Falcons (0-1-0) dropped their home opener
for the first time in four years despite two near-misses in the
final 10 minutes. The Toros (1-1-0) got three second-half saves
from goalie Steve Merriwether.
Kamara broke a scoreless tie in the 57th minute
by converting a quick counterattack. He took an upfield pass from
Ryan Taylor near the top of the box, wheeled on a defender and
fired low into the right corner of the goal, past SPU keeper James
Ward.
Seattle Pacific, although out-shot 9-7, had
three close chances. With 10 minutes left, Ross Vaillancourt (Jr.,
Bedford, NH) put Nick Letts (Jr., Dublin, Ca.) into the box, but
Letts 6-yard shot was blocked by Merriwether. In the 85th
minute, David Selby (Sr., Aloha, Or.) hit a looping 16-yard shot
off the crossbar.
The game's first scoring chance came when a
cross by SPU midfielder Brent Egbert (Sr., Bellingham, Wa./Sehome)
was inadvertently headed by CSDH defender Jeff Kunze toward his
own goal. Merriwether leaped to tip the ball around the post.
Seattle Pacific fired five of its shots after
the Kamara goal, and earned five second-half corner kicks to
finish with a 5-2 advantage. Ward (Sr., Salem, Or.) made four
saves, including a point-blank stop of Francisco Corona in the
first half.
The spirited game included a total of seven
yellow cards.
It marked the first time the Falcons have been
blanked in a home opener since 1972. They host Cal Poly Pomona
Monday at 4 p.m. before going on the road for the next seven.
