SPU Opens Volleyball Season With UCSD Tourney Split
August 27, 2004

Complete Box Scores
SPU vs. Chico State       SPU vs. Cal State San Bernardino

La JOLLA, Calif. (Aug. 27) Seattle Pacific University's volleyball season got under way Friday with Jessica Bauder cracking a total of 19 kills in two matches as the Falcons split a pair of matches at the UC San Diego Classic in RIMAC Arena.

SPU (1-1) swept Chico State before No. 7-ranked Cal State San Bernardino (2-0) returned the favor in the nightcap. In their opening match, the Falcons rallied late in the first two games and then had little trouble with the Wildcats in the third, with scores of 31-29, 30-28 and 30-20.

Despite owning the lead much of the way, SPU faced a Chico game point before scoring the last three points. Similarly, down 28-27 in the second game, Bauder (Sr., Richland, Wa./Richland) hit back-to-back kills and Whitney Dibble (So., Reno, Nv./Galena) got the solo block on game point.

Bauder finished with 12 kills and Katie Ralph (Jr., Port Orchard, Wa./South Kitsap) added nine plus four blocks. Jenna Von Moos (So., Stanwood, Wa./Stanwood) hit five kills, has 28 assists, nine digs and three service aces while Kathleen Monda (Sr., Woodinville, Wa.) had six kills, 10 assists, eight digs and four blocks.

Seattle Pacific out-blocked Chico State 11-1 and hit .279 on the attack. The Wildcats' Meghan McKinney led all players with 19 kills.

Against San Bernardino, the Falcons fell behind early in each of the first two games. They mounted a comeback in the second, drawing within 14-13 before another run by the Coyotes. In the final frame, SPU virtually traded points but could never grab the lead and fell 3030-18, 30-19 and 30-28.

Cathleen Price, who played at Seattle Pacific in 2001, led CSSB with 12 kills and Brianna Harris added 11. SPU committed 10 receiving errors and six on serves. Bauder managed seven kills but had six errors. Monda scored five points from the right side and had 12 digs and four blocks.

Seattle Pacific faces host and No. 2 ranked UC San Diego Saturday morning and, later, Cal State L.A. to complete the tournament.
