HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England (June 19)-- Seattle
Pacific University rowed to a pair of wins in the first day of the
Henley Women's Regatta and will face Princeton in Sunday morning's
semifinal round.
The Falcon women's varsity four got a good
start and then extended its lead in a final sprint in the first
round race with Trafford. Later, they scored an impressive win of
three boats-lenghts over another English crew, Royal Chester, in
five minutes, forty-six seconds over 1500 meters. It was the
eleventh victory in twelve starts this season.
"Our second race was much more
relaxed," said SPU Coach Keith Jefferson. "We got a
clean start and were able to settle in." Jefferson said the
Falcons, with three juniors and a sophomore rower, are more
experienced than Princeton but the Tigers pulled a size advantage.
The only British crew remaining in the
collegiate four category is Scotland's Aberdeen which meets
Stanford in the other semifinal. The grand final is Sunday
afternoon.
