13 Women, 5 Men Make Track All-GNAC Academic Team

SEATTLE (May 12) – Champion hurdler Janna Schaafsma, owning a perfect grade point average of 4.00, led a list of 13 women and five men from the Seattle Pacific University track & field teams to earn a place on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track and Field Academic all-conference team announced Wednesday.

A total of 99 student-athletes–37 men and 62 women–were honored, and the SPU women were second only to Central Washington’s 16 in number. Schaafsma (So., Soldotna, Ak.), who won the GNAC title in the 400 hurdles last week, was one of two honorees with a 4.00.

Making the academic team for the third year in a row were Paul Mach (Sr., Seattle, Wa./King’s), Lauren Kooy (Sr., George, Wa./Quincy), Amber Rose (Sr., Olympia, Wa./Capital)and Ally Studer (Sr., Redmond, Wa./Redmond). Mach was the conference indoor 800 winner. The Falcons’ two-time selections were Tim LeCount (Jr., Battle Ground, Wa.) and Jamie Witt (Jr., Folsom, Ca.). LeCOunt won the GNAC outdoor 5000 title while Witt was the women’s indoor mile champ.

To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university. They must also qualify to compete in either the GNAC Indoor or GNAC Outdoor track-and-field championship meet.
