EUREKA, Calif. (Apr. 17) -- One of Seattle Pacific University's men's crews remained unbeaten while the women's varsity suffered its first loss at the 21st annual Blue Heron Redwood Sprints held Saturday on Humboldt Bay.

In the final regatta prior to the conference championships, the Falcons got three wins and two silvers. The men's lightweight four went to 3-0 by edging California by 1.67 seconds. Also taking first were the men's and women's junior varsity fours, each by more than a boat-length.

Most surprising was the third-place finish by the SPU women's varsity four, which was 4-0 this season and had won 12 of its last 14 outings. Coincidentally, its last loss came on Humboldt Bay a year ago. Willamette finished 10 seconds ahead of Humboldt State, with the Falcons a total of 17.7 seconds behind.

The Falcon men's novice four absorbed its first loss as well, taking second to Cal by 1.06 seconds. Meanwhile, the men's varsity four was runner-up to the Golden Bears.

In the men's team standings, Seattle Pacific was third behind Cal and host Humboldt State. SPU was fifth in the women's standings.

The Northwest Rowing Championships are next Saturday at Lake Stevens, Wash.
