BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Apr. 3) Jennifer
Marsh won her debut in the 1500 meters and also anchored the 1600
relay's decisive finish as Seattle Pacific University won its
fifth consecutive women's team crown at the Ralph Vernacchia
Invitational Saturday at Civic Stadium.
Sara Johnson (Jr., Kennewick, Wa.) won her
fourth javelin title and the Falcons also got first-place finishes
from Abby Groth (So., Roseburg, Or.) in the 3000, Dianna
Grossglass (So., La Conner, Wa.) in the high jump, Amy Harris
(So., Philomath, Or.) in the pole vault and also their 400 relay
to edge runner-up Central Washington, 103-97.
Seattle Pacific clinched the win by taking the
long relay, the final event on the track. Marsh (Fr., Kirkland,
Wa./Juanita) ran the relay's final leg. SPU was timed in a
season-best and meet-record time of 3 minutes, 54.02 seconds1.73
ahead of Simon Fraser. Marsh came from behind in the final 400
meters to win the 1500 in 4:41.42. She already has qualified for
the national 800 this season.
The men's team, missing key performers Chris
Randolph, Tim LeCount, Micah Kellcy and Paul Mach, took sixth
place. Western Washington claimed its seventh straight title with
116 points. British Columbia was net with 74.5.
Harris and Karen Dickson (Fr., El Dorado Hills,
Ca.) became the women's fourth and fifth NCAA provisional
qualifiers. Harris cleared a career-best 11 feet, 5 3/4 inches and
was first over teammate Allie Hedges (So., Richland, Wa.) by
virtue of fewer misses. Dickson placed fourth in the 10,000 in
37:22.6, a personal record by 78 seconds.
Groth ran a 19-second PR to finish first in the
3000 in 10:30.2. Johnson's winning javelin mark was 141-9 while
Grossglass cleared 5-2 1/4. The 400 relay won in a season-best
48.52. Kelsey Gleason (So., Salem, Or.), Kinyatta Leonhardt (Fr.,
Petaluma, Ca.0 and Jean Kolb (So., Eugene, Or.) ran on both
relays.
The men got three third-place finishes: Eddie
Strickler (Fr., Richland, Wa.) in the 1500 (4:06.46), Tyrone
Hattingh (Fr., Redmond, Wa./King's) in the long jump (a PR of 20-1
3/4), and James Rosser (Fr.,Seattel, Wa./Highline) in the 10,000
(35:04.9.
Athletes of the meet were sprinter Tim Mason
and distance runner Natasha Wodak, both of Simon Fraser. Mason won
the 400 and ran in the winning 1600 relay. Wodak broke a
17-year-old meet record in the 5000 in 17:18.91.
