TACOMA, Wash. (Mar. 13) Behind Janna Schaafsma's victory in the 100-meter hurdles, her runner-up finish in the 400 hurdles and a couple relay wins, Seattle Pacific University captured its first Salzman Invitational women's title in nine years Saturday.

It was the second scored win for the Falcons in as many weeks as they finished comfortably ahead of Central Washington, 173-118.5. Western Washington was third with 113. The SPU men who, like the women were without several key individuals, were seventh.

Schaafsma (So., Soldotna, Ak.) and teammate Linda Blake (So., Richland, Wa.) went 1-2 in the 100 hurdles, crossing the line in 15.00 and 15.20 seconds, respectively. Schaafsma then came back to take second in the intermediate hurdles in 1:05.00.

Kelsey Gleason (So., Salem, Or.), Julie Duringer (Fr., Monroe, Wa.) and Kenyatta Leonhardt (Fr., Petaluma, Ca.) each legs on both winning relays. The 400 quartet was timed in 48.40 and the 1600 won in 3:59.61. Duringer was also second in the open 400 (59.86).

In the field events, Andrea Pennington (Sr., Bellingham, Wa.) claimed the javelin with a throw of 131 feet, 5 inchesless than three feet under the provisional national qualifying standard. Allie Hedges (So., Richland, Wa.) led a 1-2-3 sweep of the pole vault, clearing 10 feet, 11 3/4 inches.

Eddie Strickler (Fr., Richland, Wa.) provided the men's highlight, taking first in the 800 meters in 1:54.50. Western Washington won the men's team crown with 158 points. SPU had 32 and finished fourth.

A select travel squad will venture to Sacramento next Saturday for the Panther/Stan Wright Invitational.
