USAG Third-Ranked Falcon Gymnasts Down Washington
March 8, 2004

SEATTLE, Wa. (Mar. 8)—Corrie McDaniel won the all-around competition and Kari Kelly tied for first with UW’s Carly Dockendorf on vault as USA Gymnastics third-ranked Seattle Pacific University downed the NCAA Division I No. 12 University of Washington 192.875 to 191.475 in a women’s gymnastics meet Monday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The victory marked Seattle Pacific’s first over Washington since 1997. Overall, the Falcons have beaten the Huskies just four times in 52 meetings.

McDaniel (Jr., Lawrence, Ks.) garnered a 38.500 total over the four-event all-around contest to finish just ahead of Washington’s Kim Lewis (38.050) and Tori Quandt (37.425). The junior’s top marks were a pair of 9.8’s on bars and beam and were good enough to earn her third place on each at meet’s end.

Coming off a school record 9.875 vault performance March 5 at Oregon State in the Salbasgeon Invitational, Kelly (Jr., Yakima, Wa.) launched a 9.800 tie with Dockendorf during SPU’s opening rotation. Dockendorf went on to take top honors on floor exercise, dancing her way to a 9.900, just .50 ahead of the Falcons’ Debra Huss (Fr., Orangevale, Ca.) and Washington’s Molly Seaman.

McDaniel’s bronze finish on the balance beam broke up a near Husky sweep on the event as Seaman (9.875) was first and Amy Metcalf, second (9.825). Overall, Washington grabbed 10 of the top 15 podium finishes on the night.

Seattle Pacific was down three-tenths heading into the floor exercise but out-tumbled Washington 48.525 to 46.925 during the final rotation. The Falcons’ final team total of 192.875 was just .25 off their season-high set March 5 (192.900).

Seattle Pacific rematches with Washington at Bank of America Arena Friday night (Mar. 12). Official start time is 7o’clock. USA Gymnastics nationals are April 8-10 in Denton, Tx. SPU has finished among the top four teams the last 20 years running.
