SEATTLE (Mar. 7) For the second year in
a row, the Wests best are heading to Seattle.
Unbeaten and No.1-ranked Seattle Pacific
University is the top seed and will host the NCAA Division II
Womens Basketball West Regional beginning Friday (Mar. 12)
in Brougham Pavilion. All seven games of the regional tournament
will be played on the Falcons home court, including the
Saturday night (Mar. 13) semifinals and the Monday (Mar. 15)
championship game.
Seattle Pacific (27-0), which has won 47 of its
last 48 home games and was 12-0 this year, will face UC San Diego
(15-12) in the nightcap of the first-round. Games begin at 12:30
Friday. Action starts with No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona (21-6) vs.
Chico State (17-10), followed by No. 2 seed Cal State Bakersfield
(22-5), the defending regional champion, and Grand Canyon (16-11)
at 2:30, and No. 4 seed Western Washington (20-7) against Sonoma
State (17-10) at 5:30 p.m.
The Falcons opened the season with an 89-57
home victory over UC San Diego Nov. 21. SPU has also played Cal
Poly Pomona, Western Washington (twice) and Chico State earlier
this season.
In all, 64 teams received Div. II berths
nationwide. Winners of the eight regional tournaments will advance
to the Elite Eight, Mar. 24, 25 and 27 in Saint Joseph, Mo. The
NCAA title game will be televised live on ESPN2.
West Regional tickets will go on sale beginning
Monday at 9 a.m. at the SPU Athletics Office (206/281-2085) in the
pavilion. Prices are $10 for reserved seating and $7 for general
admission ($5 for students and youth). Ticket office hours are
9-4:30 through Thursday, 9-11 a.m. Friday and 9-4:30 Mar. 15. Box
office ticket windows will open at 11:30 a.m. Friday, 3 p.m.
Saturday and 5 p.m. Mar. 15.
Seattle Pacific is hosting a womens
regional for the third time, having parlayed the home-court
advantage to its only previous Elite Eight trip in 1998. Last year
in the regional championship game, Cal State Bakersfield came from
12 points down in the final 18 minutes to hand the Falcons their
only defeat, 85-80. SPU also hosted a first-round game in 1995.
The Falcon men wonSeattle Pacific has been ranked No. 1 in the USA
Today/ESPN coaches poll since Feb. 24. Cal State Bakersfield,
which has eliminated the Falcons from the playoffs the past two
years, is No. 23 in the most recent poll. the 2000 regional in the
pavilion.
