Unbeaten and On Top: Seattle Pacific Returns to No. 1
February 24, 2004

SEATTLE (Feb. 24) – Fifty-four weeks after its first trip to the top, Seattle Pacific University has once again assumed the No. 1 ranking in NCAA Division II women’s basketball.

The Falcons (24-0), the lone remaining unbeaten team, leapfrogged No. 2 Drury (Mo.) to replace California (Pa.) at the top. California lost for the first time last week while SPU extended its regular season win streak to 57 games. Seattle Pacific has already clinched the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title.

This is the program’s second time at No. 1. On Feb. 12, 2003, the Falcons began a five-week run which ended with a loss to Cal State Bakersfield in the NCAA West Region championship game.

Seattle Pacific earned 12 of 25 first-place votes and has seven more total points than Drury (28-1), which received eight first-place votes. California (24-1) dropped to No. 3. Bakersfield is No. 23.

SPU plays its final two home games this week, beginning Thursday (7 p.m.) versus Saint Martin’s.

Below is the USA TODAY/ESPN/WBCA Top 25 women's basketball poll, with first-place votes in parentheses, total points based on 25 points for first place through one point for 25th.
