Seattle Pacific Women Beat 'Jacks, Clinches Tie for GNAC Title
February 21, 2004

ARCATA, Calif. (Feb. 21) Behind the 13 points of guards Amy Taylor and Mandy Wood, No. 3-ranked Seattle Pacific University beat Humboldt State 77-41 Saturday night at East Gym to clinch at least a tie for its second straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball crown.

The Falcons (15-0, 24-0) also got 11 points from Michelle Beaumont in winning their 57th consecutive regular season game and 39th in a row in conference play. They host Saint Martin's Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.

One more win or any Western Washington loss will give Seattle Pacific the outright title.

Taylor (Jr., 5-8 , Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood),Wood (So., 5-6, Port Angeles, Wa.) and Beaumont (Jr., 5-11, Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) each connected on three three-pointers and SPU was 11-23 behind the arc.

Seattle Pacific's defense held Humboldt to just 20 percent shooting and 10 field goals (51 attempts). It was the seventh time an opponent has scored under 50 points.

All 11 players cored for the Falcons, with Wood and Jenny Poe (So., Enumclaw, Wa.), with 10 points, leading the reserves, who totaled 35. Poe also had five assists and three steals.

Top season scorer Valerie Gustafson (Sr., 6-0, Olympia, Wa./Black Hills) took just seven shots and had six points, but she clutched a season-high 10 rebounds. Center Brittney Kroon (So., 6-4, Wasilla, Ak.) blocked five shots to go over 100 for the season.

The Lumberjacks' (4-19, 2-12) Nicole Lynch led all scorers with 17. Humboldt has lost 18 of its last 19.

The GNAC title is the fourth for an SPU women's program this year. Soccer, cross country and, earlier Saturday, indoor track & field have also earned banners. Basketball has won league titles three times in four years and five times altogether.
