SPU Women Claim Inaugural GNAC Indoor Title

NAMPA, Id. (Feb. 21) ­ Freshman sprinter Kenyatta Leonhardt won two events as Seattle Pacific University, boosted by its freshman class, claimed the inaugural Great Northwest Athletic Conference indoor track & field championships Saturday at the Jackson Center.

The Falcons, piling up the majority of their points in the sprints, relays and middle distances, got won six events altogether to finish with a comfortable margin over runner-up Western Oregon, 160-136 1/2. Seattle Pacific freshmen totaled 85 points and four of the five individual victories.

Leonhardt (Fr., Petaluma, Ca./St. Vincent) broke her own school record in the 60-meter dash in 7.95 seconds and came back to take the 200 in 25.40. She surged to the lead in the final 15 meters of the 60 and went in front coming out of the final turn in the 200, winning by 0.90 seconds. Leonhardt was voted freshman of the meet and Jack Hoyt was named coach of the year.

Terran Legard of Central Washington was voted outstanding performer. She finished behind Leonhardt in the two sprints, won the 400 and anchored the Wildcats' winning 1600 relay. Leonhardt, running the third leg, had put Seattle Pacific in the lead.

Other SPU victories came from Jennifer Marsh (Fr., Kirkland, Wa./Juanita) in the 800 (2:14.80), Jamie Witt (Jr., Folsom, Ca.) in the mile (5:09.21) and Sharon Bjella (Fr., Everett, Wa./Everett) in the high jump (5-3 1/4). Witt, a wildcard entry, was running her first race since the fall cross country season. Marsh had no difficulty in the 800, winning by more than 4 seconds. Marsh and Witt also ran on the medley relay, which coasted to an easy win.

Paul Mach (Sr., Seattle, Wa./King's) improved his own Seattle Pacific record in the 800, winning in 1:51.49­the fourth-best time in NCAA Division II this winter. It virtually assures him a berth in the national championships Mar. 12-13 in Boston. Mach's previous best time was 1:52.40. He is a three-time conference 400 hurdles champion.

Chris Randolph (So., Lone Tree, Co./Denver Christian) took the long jump (21-10). Western Oregon was the men's team champion, with the Falcons fifth. Randolph, entered in four events and scoring in three, accounted for 22 of the team's 56 points. He was runner-up in the high jump (6-6 1/4) on greater misses while Tim LeCount (Jr., Battle Ground, Wa.) was second in the mile (4:23.43).

Leonhardt's 20 points was supported by 14 from Danae Clark (Fr., Hillsboro, Or./Glencoe), who was second in the long jump (17-6) and third in the triple jump (35-8). The Falcons got 22 points from just the 800, where Marsh and Victoria Perkins (Fr., Kent, Wa./Kentwood) finished 1-2 and Brandi McCoy (Fr., Richland, Wa./Richland) was fifth.

Additional runners-up were Allie Hedges (So., Richland, Wa./Richland) in the pole vault (11-6 1/4), Karen Dickson (Fr., El Dorado Hills, Ca./Oak Ridge) in the 5000 (19:33.96) and the 1600 relay (4:01.7).
