MONMOUTH, Ore. (Feb. 19) Mandy Wood
scored 17 points as No. 3 Seattle Pacific University beat Western
Oregon 59-44 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's
basketball game Thursday at the New P.E. Building in Monmouth.
The Falcons (23-0, 14-0 GNAC) have now won 38
straight conference games and 56 consecutive regular season
contests. The Wolves (7-14, 5-8 GNAC) suffered their 13th straight
loss in the series with SPU.
Seattle Pacific trailed 8-7 with 12:15 left in
the first half, but Wood (So., 5-7, Port Angeles, Wa.) came off
the bench to hit three treys, including one that put the Falcons
up 31-18 at halftime. Western Oregon was within 48-38 with nine
minutes left until Wood hit back-to-back baskets, including
another three, as the Falcons pulled away for the win.
Wood finished 6-for-10 from the field,
including 5-of-8 from three-point land, while Valerie Gustafson
(Sr., 6-0, Olympia, Wa./Black Hills) and Kristen Poe (Sr., 5-8,
Enumclaw, Wa./Enumclaw) added 10 points each for SPU. Brittney
Kroon (So., 6-4, Wasilla, Ak.) pulled down a game-high nine
rebounds and blocked four shots.
Western Oregon held the Falcons, the No. 5
scoring team in Division II, to a season-low point total. SPU shot
46 percent from the field, but turned the ball over 22 times. The
Falcons held the Wolves to just 37 percent shooting and forced 22
turnovers. SPU won the battle of the boards, 36-26.
Darcey Hodges led Western Oregon with 11 points
and Serenity Ragone added 10.
The Falcons play next at Humboldt State on
Saturday.
