Falcons Blast Redhawks 103-67 for 5th Straight Home Win
February 14, 2004

SEATTLE (Feb. 14) – Ralph Steele came off the bench for 18 points and led six players in double figures as Seattle Pacific University blasted Seattle University 103-67 for the Falcons’ fifth straight home win in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball game at Brougham Pavilion Saturday night.

It was the largest winning margin of the season for the Falcons (7-6, 11-11) and the 15th win for SPU in the last 17 meetings between the teams. It was the third straight loss for the Redhawks (4-9, 8-14).

Dustin Bremerman (Fr., 6-4, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) added 13 points and eight rebounds and Jordan Lee (Jr., 6-2, Tacoma, Wa./Life Christian) also scored 13. Jeffrey McDaniel had 14 for Seattle U.

Seattle Pacific hit a season-high 59 percent (36-61) from the floor, made 9 of 18 three-pointers and led by as much as 42 in the second half.

Despite center Jason Chivers (Jr., 6-8, Los Angeles, Ca.), the team’s top scorer, missing the final 14 minutes with two fouls, the Falcons threatened to put the game out of reach by halftime. Back-to-back, 22-foot three-pointers from Jeff Knudson (So., 6-7, Mukilteo, Wa./Kamiak) ignited a 25-11 run. Steele (Jr., 6-2, No. Birmingham, Al.) hit 4-5 shots and came off the bench for 12 first-half points, including nine during the spree.

The Redhawks, plagued by turnovers and an inability to shoot (31 percent from the field) over a SPU zone defense, trailed 45-25 at the break. Meanwhile, Seattle Pacific shot 53 percent, including 5-10 treys.

Seattle Pacific continued the onslaught at the outset of the second half, going on a 16-4 tear to go in front 61-29. Chivers finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. His backup, Chris Cohen (Sr., 6-8, Saint Helens, Or.), had 11 points and five boards. Knudson finished with 12 points, making 3-4 treys.

SPU plays its final two road games this week, beginning Thursday at Saint Martin’s.
