No. 3 SPU Women Win 54th Straight Regular Season Game
February 12, 2004

SEATTLE (Feb. 12) ­ Mandy Wood came off the bench to score 15 points as the No. 3 Seattle Pacific University women's basketball team beat Alaska Anchorage 69-45 on Thursday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action at Brougham Pavilion.

The win pushed the Falcons' (21-0, 12-0 GNAC) regular season win streak to 54 games and their conference string now stands at 36 straight. It was also Seattle Pacific’s 43rd consecutive regular season victory at home.

Joining Wood (So., 5-7, Port Angeles, Wa.) in double figures for SPU were Amy Taylor (Jr., 5-8, Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood-Oregon) with 13, Valerie Gustafson (Sr., 6-0, Olympia, Wa./Black Hills) with 11 and Carli Smith (So., 5-11, Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) had 10. Brittney Kroon (So., 6-4, Wasilla, Ak.) added nine points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

The Seawolves (9-12, 4-8 GNAC) were within 19-14 with 9:04 to go in the first half before the Falcons outscored UAA 22-7 the rest of the way to take a 41-21 halftime lead. Seattle Pacific took its largest lead at 69-40 with 6:44 left, but was held scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Both teams struggled from the field as SPU shot 36 percent (26-72) and Anchorage was held to just 31 percent (17-55). The Falcons were on target from behind the arc, hitting 45 percent (9-20) of their threes. SPU won the battle of the boards, 51-37, and forced 23 Anchorage turnovers.

Kamie Jo Massey led Anchorage with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Tanya Nizich added 15 points for UAA.

Seattle Pacific hosts Alaska Fairbanks Saturday at 5 p.m.
