SEATTLE, Wa. (Jan. 31)—Corrie McDaniel won the uneven bars and Debra Huss danced her way to first on floor exercise as Seattle Pacific University tumbled its first win of the season over San Jose State 191.900 to 191.375 Friday night, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation gymnastics meet at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (1-3) tumbled a season high team score and got podium finishes from six different gymnasts including McDaniel’s (So., Lawrence, Ks.) 9.825 bar victory and Huss’ (Fr., Orangevale, Ca.) top finish on floor (9.825).

McDaniel also launched a second place vault during the opening rotation with a 9.6. Teammate Cindy Reed (So., Antioch, Ca.) finished in a tie for third with 9.475.

On the uneven bars, Huss managed a third place 9.775 and negotiated the four-inch wide balance beam to a second place 9.750. The freshman scored second to the Spartans’ Shirla Choy(38.750) in the all-around competition with a 38.725. McDaniel finished third with 38.250.

Seattle Pacific’s best event score of the night was 48.425 on the floor exercise mats where five of six competitors notched totals of at least 9.600. Annastasia Ahr (Sr., San Antonio, Tx.) finished second just behind Huss, in a tie with San Jose’s Adriane Mertens with 9.825.

The Falcons have finished among the top four NCAA Division II gymnastics teams each of the last 20 years.

Seattle Pacific resumes its two-meet home stand with a three-way meet against the MPSF’s Alaska Anchorage and UC Davis next Saturday night. Official start time is scheduled for 7p.m.
