Chivers Sends SPU Men to 3rd Win in a Row, 87-62
January 24, 2004

SEATTLE (Jan. 24) – Jason Chivers poured in 22 points and hauled down 12 rebounds, pacing Seattle Pacific University to its third straight victory, 87-62 over Saint Martin’s in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball game at Brougham Pavilion Saturday.

The Falcons (5-3, 9-8) also got 17 points from Jordan Lee (Jr., 6-2, Tacoma, Wa./Life Christian) as they coasted to their 14th consecutive homecoming game win and their 11th in a row over the Saints (3-4, 7-9).

Chivers (Jr., 6-8, Los Angeles, Ca.) proved nearly unstoppable as SPU pulled away in the second half. Hit converted all six of his field-goal attempts in the period and was 10-13 for the game. It was his 11th double double in his last 12 games.

The Saints’ Brandon Hartley, the GNAC scoring leader, had 19 points but was just 7-18 from the floor. Soloman Wyatt had 20 points and Niko Nuogawa had 13 plus nine rebounds. The rest of the SMC squad totaled just 10 points.

The Falcons led virtually the entire afternoon and began to separate from the Saints late in the first period, going on a 20-5 run which extended into the opening minute of the second half. Chad Williams (So., 6-8, Burlington, Wa./Burlington-Edison-Whatcom CC) had eight of the points during the spree, which put Seattle Pacific in front 44-23.

Saint Martin’s, which shot just 36 percent from the field (23-64), including 4-22 three-pointers, drew within 14 with nine minutes left. But treys by Williams, Dustin Bremerman (Fr., 6-4, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) and Lee helped to quickly boost the bulge back to 73-49.

Williams and Bremerman each finished with 10 points. Lee hit 3-6 treys and SPU shot 51 percent (36-70) overall and 57 percent in the second half. Williams also had nine rebounds as the Falcons controlled the boards, 48-34.

Tony Binetti (So., 6-1, Enumclaw, Wa.) had 10 assists–one short of his career-high–and nine points before fouling out.

Seattle Pacific now plays its next three on the road, beginning next Saturday at Western Washington.
