No. 5 SPU Women Beat Humboldt State to Stay Unbeaten

SEATTLE (Jan. 22) ­ Reserve Carli Smith had 16 points and 12 rebounds as the No. 5 Seattle Pacific University women beat Humboldt State 82-62 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (15-0, 6-0 GNAC) have now won 48 straight regular season games and 30 consecutive conference games.

Smith (So., 5-11, Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) was one of three Falcons in double figures. Amy Taylor (Jr., 5-8, Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood-Oregon) scored 15 points and Mandy Wood (So., 5-6, Port Angeles, Wa.) added 10.

SPU started slow, falling behind 12-7 with 11:04 in the first half before outscoring the Lumberjacks (3-12, 1-5 GNAC) 18-6 in the final 4:05 to take a 46-35 halftime lead. Humboldt pulled within eight to start the second half, but the Falcons pulled away and took their largest lead of the game (73-52) with 5:34 left.

Seattle Pacific forced the Lumberjacks into 36 percent shooting while also winning the battle of the boards, 50-38. The Falcons outscored HSU 30-9 from behind the arc.

Brittney Kroon (So., Wasilla, Ak.), the No. 2 shot blocker in NCAA Div. II, had five rejections and 11 rebounds for SPU while Jenny Poe (So., Enumclaw, Wa./Enumclaw-Portland State) dished a career-high eight assists.

Humboldt’s Nicole Lynch led all scorers with 20 points while Emily Watson (Jr., 5-11, Seattle, Wa./Roosevelt) had 16 and Peni Vaefaga added 13.

Seattle Pacific hosts Western Oregon for its homecoming matinee Saturday (1:30 p.m.).
