Late Trey Lifts Redhawk Men Over Falcons, 69-66
January 15, 2004

SEATTLE (Jan. 15) -- Bim Makinde's three-pointer with 3.1 seconds remaining was the difference as Seattle University survived a second-half rally by Seattle Pacific for a 69-66 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball win Thursday night at Connolly Center.

The Falcons (2-3, 6-8), who had trailed by 12 at halftime, got the ball to Jeff Knudson (So., 6-7, Mukilteo, Wa./Kamiak) for a last-second trey but his 25-footer was just short, off the rim.

Makinde's three-pointer from 22 feet out on the left angle, was his only shot from behind the arc. He finished with 25 points, most coming off quick drives inside. Makinde was 10-14 from the field and scored 17 of SU's 30 second-half points. It was the Redhawks' (2-2, 6-7) first victory over SPU in conference play and only the second in the last 16 meetings.

Jason Chivers (Jr., 6-8, Los Angeles, Ca.) of the falcons totaled 25 points and 17 rebounds. He and Dustin Bremerman (Fr., 6-4, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower), who returned to the lineup following a one-game absence with an ankle injury, fueled a rally which put the visitors ahead 56-52 with 8:39 to go. Chivers scored 17 of his points following intermission for his eighth double double in his last nine games. Together, he and Bremerman accounted for 20 points during a sustained 29-13 run to open the final period. Bremerman finished with 12 points.

Jeffrey McDaniel gave the Redhawks the lead again at 58-57, converting an offensive rebound, and his team never trailed thereafter. Chivers tied it at 64 and again at 66 on a tip with 65 seconds left. He had a chance to put SPU in the lead with 32 seconds remaining, but missed a 15-footer. Seattle U. got the rebound and called timeout to set-up Makinde's final shot.

Niether team shot well, SPU hitting just 28 percent in the first half and 38 percent (21-56) overall. The Redhawks made just 42 percent of their field goals (28-66).

Seattle Pacific visits Northwest Nazarene Saturday night in Nampa, Id.
