Taylor Leads No. 8 SPU Women Past Seattle U.
January 10, 2004

SEATTLE (Jan. 10) ­ Guard Amy Taylor scored a career-high 25 points as the No. 8 Seattle Pacific University women beat Seattle University 82-66 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (12-0, 3-0 GNAC) have now won 45 straight regular season games and 27 consecutive conference games.

Seattle U. (5-8, 1-3 GNAC) went up by three in the final minute of the first half, but Taylor (Jr., 5-8, Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood-Oregon) made a three with 28 seconds left as SPU tied it 38-38 at halftime. The Falcons then broke the game open with a 20-4 run over the first 5:54 of the second half.

SPU pushed its lead to 62-44 with 13:19 left before the Redhawks cut the lead to 66-56 with 7:21 remaining. SU could get no closer than that as the Falcons scored eight straight points to put the game away.

Taylor shot 9-for-11 from the field (5-6 treys) and added six assists. Valerie Gustafson (Sr., 6-0, Olympia, Wa./Black Hills) had 17 points, Michelle Beaumont (Jr., 5-11, Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) scored 15 and Carli Smith (So., 5-11, Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for SPU.

Seattle Pacific won the battle of the boards 43-32, including a 25-14 edge on the glass in the second half. The Falcons held the Redhawks to 41 percent shooting while making 31-of-63 (.492) from the field, including 52 percent (9-17) from three-point range.

Thresia Busch led Seattle University with 17 points and Ashley Payne added 15.

Conference play continues next week as Seattle Pacific travels to Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday and Alaska Anchorage on Saturday.
