Battlers Beat Undermanned Falcons Men in Overtime of Oak Harbor Freight Lines Classic Matchup, 84-82
December 29, 2003

SEATTLE (Dec. 29) – Josh Allen’s 8-foot banker just before the buzzer gave Alderson-Broaddus an 84-82 overtime win over an undermanned Seattle Pacific University in the first round of the Oak Harbor Freight Lines Holiday Classic Monday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Battlers (5-2) from West Virginia led virtually the entire game but the Falcons’ Jordan Lee’s (Jr., 6-2, Tacoma, Wa./Life Christian) hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to knot the score at 72 with 14.6 seconds left in regulation.

Alderson-Broaddus scored the first four points of the extra period and led 81-76 with 1:35 left but SPU came back to tie at 82-all on treys by Ralph Steele (Jr., 6-2, N. Birmingham, Al.) and Jeff Knudson (So., 6-7, Mukilteo, Wa./Kamiak), the latter a 22-footer with 15 seconds to go. Following timeouts by both teams, inbounds play went to Allen, who drove and scored from the right side of the lane with 0.5 seconds left.

Seattle Pacific (4-6), which lost its third straight, was without center Jason Chivers (Jr., 6-8, Los Angeles, Ca.), the top rebounder in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and forward Dustin Bremerman (Fr., 6-4, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower), the team’s No. 3 scorer. Chivers suffered an ankle injury in practice and Bremerman also has an ankle injury.

Michael Tucker of A-B led all players with 26 points and 12 rebounds, while Tyrone Hammonds added 20 points and Allen 18. Tucker scored 16 points in the second period and four in the overtime. The Battlers shot 54 percent (35-65) from the field.

Lee and Steele each had 22 points for SPU, which shot just 44 percent (28-64) but hit 13 (of 32) 3-pointers. Lee scored 20 points after halftime, connecting on 8-12 field goals, including 3-5 outside the arc. Steele made five 3-pointers and his 11 points off the bench helped keep the Falcons close at the break.

Alderson-Broaddus broke on top 53-43 with 11:48 left in the second half and led 70-63 with 4:28 remaining. But Lee converted a three-point play and hit the trey to highlight another rally.

Alderson-Broaddus meets Seattle University at 5 p.m. Tuesday and SPU faces Saint Martin’s in the final game of the tourney at 7. The Saints beat the Redhawks 100-88 in the first game Monday.
