No. 13 SPU Women Beat No. 23 Chico State to Remain Undefeated
December 6, 2003

SEATTLE (Dec. 6) -- Led by Valerie Gustafson's career-high 29 points, the No. 13 Seattle Pacific University women's basketball team beat No. 23 Chico State 88-71 on Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion. With the win, the Falcons (6-0, 1-0) extended their regular-season win streak to 39 games.

SPU led from the start, with Gustafson (Sr., 6-0, Olympia, Wa./Black Hills) scoring 17 of her 29 points in the first half, including her first two three-pointers of the season. She continued her dominant play, shooting 11-16 from the field. Gustafson has totaled 54 points in the past two games.

After trailing by seven at halftime, the Wildcats (3-1) cut the Falcons' lead to four with 13:05 remaining. Chico State was within nine with 8:56 to play before SPU went on a 20-7 run to take its largest lead of the game (86-64) with 1:46 left.

Amy Taylor (Jr., 5-8, Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood-Oregon) scored all seven of her points during the run and finished with a season-high 10 assists for Seattle Pacific. Michelle Beaumont (Jr., 5-11, Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) added a season-high 16 points.

The Falcons' bench outscored Chico 28-13 as reserve Carli Smith (So., 5-11, Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian) led the way with 12 points and 15 rebounds. SPU outrebounded the Wildcats 49-39.

Alex Jackson paced Chico State with 18 points and Kim Abts added 14 points and 10 assists for the Wildcats.

Following final exams, the Falcons travel to Portland to play Warner Pacific on Friday, Dec. 12 and visit Northwest College on Saturday, Dec. 13.
