ANCHORAGE (Dec. 4) -- Jordan Lee poured in a
career-high 29 points and Dustin Bremerman scored five of his 16
points in overtime as Seattle Pacific University opened Great
Northwest Athletic Conference play by beating Alaska Anchorage
89-83 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
A three-pointer by Lee (Jr., 6-2, Tacoma,
Wa./Life Christian) gave the Falcons (1-0, 3-2) an 80-75 lead
midway through the third period. Bremerman (Fr., 6-4, Yakima,
Wa./Eisenhower) connected on a trey and a long two-pointer in the
overtime.
Down 86-83, the Seawolves (0-1, 5-2) had a
final opportunity to tie the game with 14 seconds left but Aaron
Lawrence missed a three-pointer. Tony Binetti (So., 6-1, Enumclaw,
Wa.) got the rebound and made three of four free throws in the
final 11 seconds to provide the final margin and give SPU its
second road win in a row.
Seattle Pacific trailed by 43-37 at halftime
the two teams exchanged the lead nine times in the second half.
Two free throws by Lee and a short jumper by Jason Chivers (Jr.,
6-8, Los Angeles, Ca.) put SPU ahead 71-68 with 2:35 left in
regulation. But after Anchorage went back in front, Bremerman made
the second of two foul shots to tie it at 72 and send the game
into overtime with 29 seconds to go.
Chivers scored 13 -- 10 in the second half --
and hauled down 11 rebounds before fouling out with a minute left
in regulation. Binetti and Mike Bushmaker (So., 6-7, Yakima,
Wa./Eisenhower) each finished with 11 points. Binetti also had
eight assists while Bushmaker collected eight boards.
The Seawolves, coming off a pair of wins over
Div. I teams last week, were led by 24 points and 10 rebounds of
Kemmy Burgess. Mark Drake scored 22. Peter Bullock, an
all-tournament selection at the Great Alaska Shootout, scored the
first three UAA points of the extra period but later fouled out
with 14 points.
Anchorage led by as many as nine points in the
opening half, when it shot 57 percent from the field. However the
Seawolves hit just 29 percent in the second half and SPU
controlled the boards, 43-27, and hit 18 of 21 free throws.
The Falcons, three games into a stretch of
seven straight road games, face Alaska Fairbanks Saturday
afternoon. It will be the final conference game prior to Jan. 8.
