SPU Women Roll On, Overwhelm Stanislaus to Go 4-0
November 29, 2003

NAMPA, Ida. (Nov. 29) -- Mandy Wood came off the bench for a career-high 19 points to pace Seattle Pacific University to its fourth straight win, 89-60 over Cal State Stanislaus Saturday at Montgomery Fieldhouse.

The 22nd-ranked Falcons began to break open the game late in the first half and never allowed the Warriors (2-1) to make a serious run in the second period to claim the Shilo Inn Homecoming Classic tournament title. It was the first loss by Stanislaus since last year's NCAA Division II tournament and SPU has now won 37 consecutive regular season games.

Valerie Gustafson (Sr., 6-0, Olympia, Wa./Black Hills) had 18 points, five steals and four assists and Amy Taylor (Jr., 5-8, Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood) 13 points for Seattle Pacific, which shot 46 percent (32-70) from the field, including 9-17 three-pointers. Wood (So., 5-6, Port Angeles, Wa.) -- who was 8-14 from the field and made four steals -- and Taylor each connected on three treys. Kristin Poe (Sr., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa.) had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Gustafson was voted the tournament MVP--her second such honor in as many weeks-and Wood also made the all-tournament team.

The Falcons controlled the pace throughout and put together a 16-5 run which gave them a 28-15 lead with 4:36 left in the first period, after which SPU led 39-25. The gap widened to 30, at 83-53, with under four minutes remaining.

CSUS (2-1) was paced by center Aprile Powell, who scored 23 points and hauled in nine rebounds, both game-highs. Shavaki Jackson, a 6-foot-5 transfer who led California in rebounding last season, managed just five points and five boards. She averages 14.5 and 9.0, respectively. The Warriors committed 41 turnovers -- 17 off steals -- and shot just 39 percent from the floor.

SPU opens Great Northwest Athletic Conference play by hosting Central Washington Thursday night.
