No. 22 SPU Women Open Basktball Season With Win
November 21, 2003

SEATTLE (Nov. 21) -- Brittany Kroon recorded her first career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds as the No. 22 Seattle Pacific women's basketball team opened its season with an 89-57 win over UC San Diego in the first round of the Falcon Hoop Classic on Friday night at Brougham Pavilion.

Kroon (So., 6-4, Wasilla, Ak.) also added a game-high four blocked shots while making her first career start for the Falcons (1-0), who extended their regular season win streak to 34 games. SPU has now won 16 of its last 17 openers under Coach Gordy Presnell (16th year).

Michelle Beaumont (Jr., 5-11, Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) had 15 points and Jenny Poe (So., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa./Enumclaw-Portland State) added 12 for SPU. Falcon guard Amy Taylor (Jr., 5-8, Shoreline, Wa./Shorewood-Oregon) chipped in seven assists in her debut.

The Falcons held the Tritons (0-1) to 34 percent shooting from the field while forcing them into 27 turnovers. SPU went on a 13-4 run to open the second half, taking a 53-32 lead with 16:06 left to put the game away.

The SPU reserves outscored the UC San Diego bench 38-16. Ali Ginn led the Tritons with 12 points.

The Falcons face MSU Billings in the second round Saturday at 5 p.m. It's a rematch of last year's West Region semifinal. UC San Diego plays Central Washington at 1 p.m. Saturday.

In the opening game of the Falcon Hoop Classic on Friday afternoon, MSU Billings beat Central Washington 70-68.
